Panthers Set New Standards in Men’s 3000m, Women’s 4x400m Relay
RESULTS
NOTRE DAME, Ind. – Two school records fell for Pitt track and field to close out the Meyo Invitational Saturday at Loftus Sports Center.
Sophomore Nick Wolk took down a 27-year-old record in the men's 3000m with a time of 8:07.09, besting the previous mark of 8:09.52 set by Keith Dowling in 1991. Wolk placed eighth in the event.
Seniors Morgan Harvey, Quadaisha Newkirk, Laila Ismail and Deisree Garland handily won the 4x400m relay in a school-record time of 3:35.73. The mark broke the previous record of 3:36.43 set by Zoey Whittington, Taylor Ellis-Watson, Arielle Fonrose and Jonique Lawrence in 2012.
"With the rich history of Pitt track and field, any time a school record is broken it's pretty special," head coach Alonzo Webb said. "To witness Nick Wolk running 8:07.04 to break the 3000 meter record set in 1991 by Keith Dowling makes it even more special because of the athlete he was and how long that record lasted. Our women breaking the 4x400m record with a time of 3:35.73 – that places them first in the ACC and top 10 in the nation – is special as well because all four of the members – Morgan Harvey, Quadaisha Newkirk, Laila Ismail and Desiree Garland – are seniors and have developed a unique bond and friendship. The competitiveness of the entire team was what we were looking for and that goal was achieved. Overall I thought it was a successful weekend. We will continue to build on this momentum with our final opportunity for most of the team next weekend."
Another highlight of the meet was freshman Daveon Finley advancing to the finals of the men's 60m hurdles. He finished fourth overall with a personal best time of 8.12 after posting 8.28 in the semifinals.
