Panthers fall to Georgetown in Game One, Defeat Coastal Carolina in Game Two
CONWAY, S.C. – The University of Pittsburgh softball team split on day two of the Chanticleer Showdown, Saturday, Feb. 24, falling to Georgetown before defeating the Chanticleers at Coastal Carolina Softball Field in Conway, S.C.
The Panthers [8-4-1] dropped their first game of the day to the Hoyas [3-9] 5-3. Despite a late comeback attempt that saw Pitt score three in the final two innings of play, Georgetown held on for the victory. The Panthers tallied five hits in the game, with senior Giorgiana Zeremenko and sophomore Kaitlyn Kruger each producing two. Zeremenko finished with all three RBI after recording a two-run homer and an RBI-single.
Against the Chanticleers [10-4], Pitt bounced back with a 4-3 victory. Two home runs in the game gave the Panthers a 4-1 lead, as Kruger and senior Erin Hershman both went yard. Coastal Carolina's comeback in the final inning fell short as they were only able to push across two runs. Junior Sarah Dawson tossed a complete game, striking out a career-high seven batters.
Game One Scoring Summary: Georgetown 5, Pitt 3
A four-hit inning for the Hoyas put Georgetown up 2-0 in the opening inning of play. Back-to-back leadoff singles got things going for the visiting team. A third single juiced the bases, before a double by Savannah Jones brought around two runs for the Hoyas.
A third run was scored by Georgetown in the top of the third as a double by Jones scored Mallory Belknap, who reached the base paths on an error.
The Hoyas added two to their total in the fourth on back-to-back hits and a passed ball.
Pitt got on the board in the bottom of the sixth, thanks to a two-run blast from Zeremenko. The long ball brought around Solak, who was hit with a pitch to start the inning.
The Panthers comeback fell short in the seventh inning of play as Pitt was only able to push across one run. Junior Alexis Solak was hit with a pitch to start the inning and came around on a single to left field by Zeremenko. She was left stranded as junior Gabrielle Fredericks grounded out to end the frame.
Game Two Scoring Summary: Pitt 4, Coastal Carolina 3
With her third home run of the weekend, Kruger put Pitt on the board in the opening inning of play. A two-run shot, Zeremenko came around as she singled in the at-bat prior to the blast.
Coastal Carolina cut the Panthers' lead in half in the bottom of the third. A leadoff double by Natalie David set up a two-out RBI-single for Stavi Augur.
A second home run by the Panthers gave Pitt two extra insurance runs, Hershman blasted a two-run shot down the right field line. The Panthers led 4-1.
The Chanticleers come back fell short in the final inning of play, despite a two-run shot by David to pull Coastal Carolina within one, 4-3. The Chanticleers were unable to push anymore runs across in the frame.
