Pitt Resumes Action Friday, Feb. 2 versus No. 6 NC State
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The University of Pittsburgh wrestling team dropped a 26-10 decision to No. 25 North Carolina Friday night at Carmichael Arena.
With the loss, the Panthers drop to 2-8 overall and 1-3 against ACC foes while the Tar Heels move to 8-8 on the year and earn their second conference win.
Junior LJ Bentley (125), senior Dom Forys (133) and redshirt freshman Jake Wentzel (165) were the lone Pitt wins on the day.
"We lost three overtime matches tonight and that's frustrating," said head coach Keith Gavin. "We have to start winning those close ones. We did some good work but were inconsistent and didn't close matches out."
The Panthers started the conference dual meet strong, picking up wins at 125 and 133 pounds. Bentley picked up the first win of the night at 125, defeating James Szymanski in an 8-2 decision. Forys followed that with a 9-1 major decision over Zach Sherman at 133, bringing the team score to 7-0 in favor of Pitt.
The following bout featured the No. 17 and No. 16 ranked wrestlers at 141 pounds in redshirt senior Nick Zanetta and UNC's A.C. Headlee. Zanetta fell in sudden victory, 4-2, and was the first of three overtime matches in the dual.
The Tar Heels tied the team race, 7-7, after junior Robert Lee fell in a 17-3 major decision to No. 6 Troy Heilmann.
North Carolina took the following match at 157 pounds, taking the lead 10-7, as redshirt sophomore Taleb Rahmani also fell in sudden victory, 3-1, to No. 16 Kennedy Monday.
Pitt picked up its final win of the day at 165 pounds after Wentzel won in a 7-3 decision.
North Carolina took the remaining four bouts including two by bonus points at 174 pounds and 197 pounds.
The Panthers resume action Friday, Feb. 2 when they host No. 6 NC State at 7 p.m. in the Fitzgerald Field House.
