THE SERIES
- Pitt trails the all-time series closely, behind the Tar Heels by only one match, with a record of 4-5. North Carolina has been victorious in the past two meetings.
- The two teams first met in the 1982 season, resulting in a 32-14 loss for the Panthers.
LAST TIME OUT
- Pitt opened ACC action Sunday, Jan. 21 with No. 10 Virginia Tech in the Fitzgerald Field House.
- The Panthers dropped a 31-6 decision to the Hokies as senior Dom Forys (133) and redshirt senior Ryan Solomon (285) were the lone wins for Pitt.
- Forys faced VT's Dennis Gustafson for the fourth time in his career, and defeated the 13th-ranked 133-pounder in a 4-1 decision and is now 4-0 against Gustafson.
- Solomon also faced a ranked opponent as he took down No. 18 Andrew Dunn in a 2-0 decision.
PANTHERS IN THE COACHES' PANEL
- Five Panthers were ranked in the first round of NCAA Coaches' Panel Rankings, released Jan. 19.
- 133, Dom Forys, #11
- 141, Nick Zanetta, #15
- 157, Taleb Rahmani, #22
- 184, Gregg Harvey, #33
- 285, Ryan Solomon, #15
- The final rankings will be one of the tools used as part of the selection process to determine the qualifiers for the 2018 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships.
- Wrestlers in each weight class will be measured by winning percentage, rating percentage index (RPI) and coaches' rankings to earn spots in their qualifying tournaments for the 2018 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships.
- The coaches' rankings are compiled by a vote of coaches representing each qualifying tournament. For ranking purposes, coaches may only consider a wrestler that has been designated as a starter at a respective weight class.
- To be eligible for the rankings, wrestlers must have participated in at least five matches against Division I opponents in the weight class and have wrestled within the last 30 days.
SOLOMON NAMED ACC WRESTLER OF THE WEEK
- Redshirt senior Ryan Solomon was named ACC Wrestler of the Week Jan. 10 after pinning his Oklahoma opponent to lift the Panthers to victory.
- Entering the final bout of the dual, Pitt was trailing the team race, 18-13, and needed a pin from Solomon to give the Panthers the win, and he did just that. The Milton, Pa., native was working with a 3-0 lead entering the second period and didn't need much time after that as he recorded the fall in 3:51.
- The conference weekly honors is the third of Solomon's career as he earned the honor in 2017 and 2016.
LOOKING AHEAD
- The Panthers return to Pittsburgh Friday, Feb. 2 to take on nationally-ranked NC State at 7 p.m.
