Pitt Falls to No. 10 Virginia Tech in ACC Opener

Forys, Solomon Record Lone Wins for Panthers
PITTSBURGH – The University of Pittsburgh wrestling team fell to No. 10 Virginia Tech, 31-6, in its first ACC competition of the season Sunday afternoon at the Fitzgerald Field House.
With the loss, Pitt moves to 2-7 overall and 0-1 in the ACC while the Hokies move to 9-2 overall and 1-0 against ACC foes.
Individually, two Panthers picked up wins on the day in senior Dom Forys at 133 pounds and redshirt senior Ryan Solomon at 285 pounds.
The Panthers fell behind quickly as junior LJ Bentley was pinned in sudden victory at 125 pounds, giving Virginia Tech an early 6-0 advantage.
Next up at 133 pounds was a battle between two ranked opponents. Forys, ranked 11th in the country, picked up a 4-1 decision over No. 14 Dennis Gustafson. Forys took a 2-0 lead after a first period takedown and added two more with a reversal in the second period. Gustafson added his lone point of the match with an escape in the third. The victory marked Forys' fourth consecutive win over Gustafson and brought the team score to 6-3, with the Hokies holding on to the lead.
Virginia Tech took control from there on, collecting wins in the following seven matchups.
Pitt's second individual win didn't come until the final bout of the day in what was another ranked matchup at 285 pounds. Solomon, ranked 16th in the country, won in a 2-0 decision against No. 18 Andrew Dunn. Solomon earned his points in the win via an escape in the second period and added one more with riding time. With the win, Solomon improves to 15-4 on the year and 8-1 in duals.
Up next, the Panthers will look to bounce back when they travel to Chapel Hill, N.C., to face North Carolina (7-8, 1-0 ACC) Friday, Jan. 26.
