Panthers, Hokies Clash for 15th time in Program History

PITTSBURGH – The University of Pittsburgh wrestling team (2-6) opens ACC action Sunday, Jan. 21 when the No. 10 Virginia Tech Hokies (9-2) visit the Fitzgerald Field House at 2 p.m.

THE SERIES
- The Panthers and Hokies clash in ACC-opener action for the second consecutive season.
- Pitt leads the all-time series 11-3, while Virginia Tech has claimed all three wins in the last three meetings.
- The two teams first met in the 1964-65 season that resulted in a 30-0 win for the Panthers.
LAST TIME OUT
- In their last time out, the Panthers hosted No. 25 North Dakota State and No. 18 Oklahoma Friday, Jan. 5 and Sunday, Jan. 7, respectively.
- Pitt opened the weekend with a 28-11 loss to NDSU. Senior Dom Forys (133), redshirt senior Nick Zanetta (141) and redshirt freshman Gregg Harvey (184) all recorded individual wins in the team loss.
- The Panthers bounced back Sunday as they upset No. 18 Oklahoma, 19-18, in thrilling fashion. Dom Forys (133), Nick Zanetta (141), Taleb Rahmani (157), Greggy Harvey (184) and Ryan Solomon (285) all recorded wins.
- Solomon's pin lifted Pitt to victory as the team needed six points to push past the Sooners.
PANTHERS IN THE COACHES' PANEL
- Five Panthers were ranked in the first round of NCAA Coaches' Panel Rankings, released Jan. 19.

- The final rankings will be one of the tools used as part of the selection process to determine the qualifiers for the 2018 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships.
- Wrestlers in each weight class will be measured by winning percentage, rating percentage index (RPI) and coaches' rankings to earn spots in their qualifying tournaments for the 2018 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships.
- The coaches' rankings are compiled by a vote of coaches representing each qualifying tournament. For ranking purposes, coaches may only consider a wrestler that has been designated as a starter at a respective weight class.

- To be eligible for the rankings, wrestlers must have participated in at least five matches against Division I opponents in the weight class and have wrestled within the last 30 days.
SOLOMON NAMED ACC WRESTLER OF THE WEEK
- Redshirt senior Ryan Solomon was named ACC Wrestler of the Week Jan. 10 after pinning his Oklahoma opponent to lift the Panthers to victory.
- Entering the final bout of the dual, Pitt was trailing the team race, 18-13, and needed a pin from Solomon to give the Panthers the win, and he did just that. The Milton, Pa., native was working with a 3-0 lead entering the second period and didn't need much time after that as he recorded the fall in 3:51.
- The conference weekly honors is the third of Solomon's career as he earned the honor in 2017 and 2016.
LOOKING AHEAD
- Pitt continues ACC action as the team makes the trip to Chapel Hill, N.C., Friday, Jan. 26 to take on North Carolina. The dual meet is set to get underway at 7 p.m.
