Senior Bryce Cregan and junior Javi Perez Named Captains
PITTSBURGH – University of Pittsburgh men's soccer head coach Jay Vidovich announced Wednesday that senior defender Bryce Cregan and junior midfield Javi Perez will serve as team captains for the 2017 season.
"Bryce and Javi are obvious choices to captain and lead our team this year," Vidovich said. "Our players believe in them and the staff trusts them to do the right thing for this program. They are both top players and have strong personalities that will assist them in leading the team to success through the ups and downs of the season."
Cregan enters his second and final season with the Panthers after transferring from Akron for the 2016 campaign. The Dallastown, Pa., native will lead the squad once again as he was a team captain a year ago. Cregan started and played in 16 total games for Pitt last season, registering three shots on goal.
"It's great to be able to lead the team again this year," Cregan said. "I'm really excited about leading these boys with the help of Javi and achieving our goals."
Although joining the team in January of 2017, Perez will officially join the Panthers Friday when they open the season at Ohio State. Perez, a native of Valencia, Spain, brings years of invaluable experience to Pittsburgh after training with Valencia CF, one of the top youth academies in Spain's La Liga.
"I'm very excited to accept this challenge of leading this great group with Bryce to achieve our goals this season," Perez said.
Pitt opens the 2017 season Friday, August 25 when it travels to Columbus, Ohio, to take on the Buckeyes at 7 p.m. The Panthers will conclude the weekend with a match against James Madison, also in Columbus, Sunday, Aug. 27 at 4 p.m.
Flex season ticket packages and single-match tickets are now on sale for the 2017 men's soccer season. Tickets may be purchased online by clicking here or by calling the Panthers Ticket Office at 800-643-7488.
