PITTSBURGH – University of Pittsburgh freshman center Peace Ilegomah has been cleared for immediate eligibility by the NCAA school officials announced Friday afternoon. His eligibility status was in question due to the timing of his initial high school enrollment and initial collegiate enrollment.
"Our compliance team, led by Dustin [Gray], along with [assistant coach] Sam [Ferry], did a tremendous job working with the NCAA to determine Peace's eligibility status," said head coach Kevin Stallings. "I commend the efforts by our team here as well as the NCAA in looking out for the best interests of the student-athlete. Peace is an outstanding young man with a terrific opportunity to grow on and off the court at the University of Pittsburgh."
The Benin City, Nigeria, native, came to the United States in August of 2012 at the age of 14. He was placed in the ninth grade at Valhalla High School [N.Y.] before closing out his high school career at Roselle Catholic [N.J.]. Upon graduation, Ilegomah spent a prep year at CBD Montverde [Fla.] where he averaged 11.0 points, 13.0 rebounds and 2.0 blocks per game in helping the team to a 25-7 record and a runner-up finish in the National Prep Championship.
Mitigating circumstances led to the NCAA waving the residence and season of eligibility requirement associated with the delayed enrollment legislation. Had the initial ruling stood, he would have been ineligible for competition during the 2017-18 season and would have lost a year of eligibility.
Pitt opens the 2017-18 season by hosting Division II Slippery Rock in a Shoot Down Cancer Exhibition Game presented by UPMC Hillman Cancer Center Saturday, Nov. 4 at the Petersen Events Center. Game time is set for 2 p.m. with all students invited to participate in an on-court event immediately following the contest. Stallings will spearhead the fundraising efforts to raise money in the fight against cancer by donating $1 for every fan in attendance. The University of Pittsburgh athletic department will also contribute $5 per single-game ticket purchased. All proceeds from the event will go to local pediatric cancer research. Tickets for the game can be purchased by calling the Panthers Ticket Office at 800-643-7488 or by clicking HERE.
Season tickets, mini packages and single-game tickets for the 2017-18 season are also on sale now. Great lower level locations are available and can be reserved by calling the Panthers Ticket Office at 800-643-7488 or by clicking HERE.
